Does my accounting software support Peppol? How to check

How to check whether your UK accounting software supports Peppol e-invoicing: where to look, the questions to ask, red flags and how to test it yourself.

Published 5 min readBy

To check whether your accounting software supports Peppol, look for three things: it must send and receive structured invoices, it must connect to a Peppol certified Access Point, and it must cover UK VAT invoices. Check the vendor's documentation, ask the questions below in writing, and, if you can, prove it with a test invoice.

Peppol is confirmed as the network for the UK's e-invoicing mandate from April 2029. The GOV.UK Tax update 2026 summary says: "The government has announced that the electronic procurement system Peppol will be the core interoperability network for e-invoicing in the UK." So "does it do Peppol?" is now the key question for any finance software.

Why the answer is often unclear

  • Words are used loosely. "E-invoicing" in a product brochure can mean emailing a PDF. A PDF is not an e-invoice in the Peppol sense.
  • Country matters. Many products already support Peppol in other countries. That does not automatically mean UK invoices, UK identifiers or UK VAT rules are covered.
  • Sending is not receiving. Some tools can send but not receive, or the reverse.
  • The UK standard is not final. The government said it will review whether to adopt an existing standard or design a UK-specific one. Vendors may only be able to commit to dates once that is settled.

We do not list which products support Peppol, because it changes quickly and depends on edition and plan. Use the method below and get your own answer.

Step 1: check the vendor's own documentation

Search the vendor's help centre (not a reseller's blog) for "Peppol", "e-invoicing UK" and "Access Point". Note:

  • the date the page was last updated;
  • whether it names the UK specifically;
  • whether it covers both sending and receiving;
  • which plan or edition it applies to.

Save a copy or screenshot with the date. Vendor pages change.

Step 2: ask these questions in writing

# Question What a good answer looks like
1 Can I send Peppol invoices and credit notes for UK VAT invoices? Yes, with a link to UK documentation
2 Can I receive Peppol invoices and credit notes into my bills/AP? Yes, landing as draft bills, not as PDFs
3 Which Peppol Access Point do you use? A named provider, or "we are one"
4 Is it a Peppol certified service provider? Yes; verifiable on the OpenPeppol list
5 What will my Peppol ID be, and will you register it in the Peppol Directory? A clear scheme, for example 9932 with your VAT number, and automatic registration
6 Which specification do you use? Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 today, with a plan for any UK-specific rules
7 Is it included in my plan? Any per-invoice fees? A clear price, in writing
8 Do you validate invoices before sending and show me errors? Yes, with the rule that failed
9 Do you support Peppol invoice responses? Yes, or a stated plan
10 When will all of this be available, and can I start early? A date, not "before 2029"

Step 3: verify the Access Point

OpenPeppol publishes a list of Peppol certified service providers, with the country of legal residence and the Peppol Authority for each. Search it for the provider your vendor names. If you cannot find it, ask the vendor to explain the relationship. Some vendors use a partner whose name differs from the software brand.

Step 4: test it

If the feature is available, do a real test:

  1. Turn on Peppol in your software and confirm your business appears in the Peppol Directory.
  2. Send a test invoice to a friendly customer already on Peppol, such as a public-sector body. NHS Supply Chain already requires suppliers to invoice via Peppol.
  3. Ask a supplier on Peppol to send you an invoice and check it arrives in your bills.
  4. Try a credit note.
  5. Deliberately leave out a required field and see how the software reports the error.

Red flags

  • "We support e-invoicing" with no mention of Peppol.
  • Support only for other countries, with no UK date.
  • Receiving means "forward PDFs to our inbox address". That is useful for scanning, but it is not receiving Peppol invoices.
  • No named Access Point.
  • No written price.
  • A vague roadmap with no date at all, especially once UK guidance is published.

If your software does not support Peppol

Situation Options
Vendor has a dated UK plan Wait, but recheck after the roadmap and each update
Vendor has no plan Plan a migration, ideally aligned with any Making Tax Digital change
You use spreadsheets or Word Move to accounting software that supports Peppol
You use an ERP or several systems Consider a separate Access Point or integration provider. See our ERP guide and how to choose an Access Point

The consultation response says the government expects providers to offer products that work with existing business software, so most users should not need to understand the underlying standards. It also says several Making Tax Digital providers focused on small businesses can already provide e-invoicing.

What to do now

  • Find your vendor's UK Peppol documentation and save a dated copy.
  • Email the ten questions above.
  • Check the named Access Point on the OpenPeppol list.
  • Note the answer and the date in your readiness checklist.
  • Recheck after the Budget 2026 roadmap on 28 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my accounting software supports Peppol?

Check the vendor's help centre for UK Peppol sending and receiving, then ask the vendor in writing which Access Point it uses and whether it is a Peppol certified service provider. The best proof is a successful test invoice to and from another Peppol participant.

Is 'e-invoicing' the same as Peppol support?

No. Some products call emailed PDF invoices 'e-invoices'. Peppol support means the software sends and receives structured invoices over the Peppol network through an Access Point.

What if my software does not support Peppol yet?

Ask for a dated plan in writing. Many vendors are waiting for the UK specification, due to be set out from the Budget 2026 roadmap. If there is no credible plan by the time guidance is published, consider an add-on Access Point or switching software.

Is there an official list of Peppol-ready UK accounting software?

Not at the time of writing. OpenPeppol publishes a list of certified service providers (Access Points), but that is not a list of accounting packages. The roadmap may say how software and providers will be accredited.
