What HMRC requires
The checks follow the list of what a full VAT invoice must show in VAT Notice 700, section 16.3. Simplified invoices (for retail supplies of £250 or less) and modified invoices have lighter rules. For more detail, read UK VAT invoice requirements for e-invoices.
The VAT number check confirms the format and HMRC check digits. It does not confirm the number is currently registered: use HMRC's Check a UK VAT number service for that. This tool is not tax advice.
